GRADUATION AWARDS & COLLEGE CREDIT - UPDATED POLICIES FOR CJSHS STUDENT HANDBOOK
The following are updated polices to the CJSHS handbook as voted on by the board of education on Monday, October 10, 2022.
Graduation Awards
The Valedictorian and Salutatorian awards are presented to graduating seniors who completed the requirements for the diploma of non-modified curriculum, per administrative approval with distinction of the highest and second highest cumulative grade point averages respectively. The grade point average will be computed by May 1st of the eighth semester and will be based on a 4.0 scale. Semester grades will be used to compute grade point averages. In the event of a tie for valedictorian, there will not be a student or students named as salutatorian. In the case of a tie for salutatorian, the following criteria will be evaluated to determine who the salutatorian will be: ACT score, SAT score, State Assessment scores. Foreign Exchange students are not considered for Valedictorian or Salutatorian
A student is required to take six (6) of the classes listed below to be eligible for valedictorian or salutatorian; attend Central High School their junior and senior years; and be enrolled in the equivalent of at least 5 classes during the 2nd semester of senior year.
Advanced Biology
Chemistry
Physics
Geometry
Algebra II
Foreign Languages
Algebra III (.5 credit)
*Any other dual enrollment college academic courses through Cowley or another administrator approved college or administrator/counselor approved online HS credit courses.
College Credit
Central High School students in grades 10, 11 and 12 attending college classes during the school year will receive both college credit and high school credit. The student and parent(s) / guardian(s) will be informed of this policy upon enrollment. It is the intent of the school district for students to take challenging and rigorous coursework. To that end, to provide a more equitable method of calculating grade point averages and rank in class, the district will treat all courses taken for dual credit as an elective class a pass/fail grade and they will not be used in the calculation of the high school grade point average. However, the final grade for all concurrent classes used for core classes (example: College Algebra (if used for one of the 3 required credits) or Composition I & II (if taken in place of English IV) will be used on the final transcript as well as in GPA calculation. There may be unique individual circumstances and cases that require a Board of Education ruling. An appeal of the circumstances in such cases should be referred to the superintendent by the high school principal and counselor. Parents and students should make their initial appeal in such cases to the building principal and counselor in a timely fashion.
